Welsh Exports up to Quarter 3, 2010
The latest National Statistics on UK regional exports produced by HM Revenue and Customs for the third quarter of 2010 were released on 9 December 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Welsh exports for the four quarters up to and including quarter 3 2010 were down 6.3 per cent on the previous four quarters (sum of the devolved countries and English regions up 9.7 per cent). Figures for quarter 3 2010 in isolation were up on the same quarter of 2009 and down on the previous quarter.
The key results are as follows.
- The value of exports for Wales for the four quarters up to and including quarter 3 2010 fell by £596 million compared to the previous four quarters.
- There was an increase in exports to EU countries and a fall in exports to non-EU countries, up £54 million (1.1 per cent) and down £650 million (14.3 per cent) respectively.
- Three of the twelve devolved countries and English regions saw falls over this period. Wales had the second largest percentage decrease in the value of exports over these four quarters (down 6.3 per cent) after Northern Ireland and before the East Midlands (down 6.4 per cent and 3.3 per cent respectively). The largest increases were in the West Midlands, the North East and the South West (up 25.5 per cent, 19.4 per cent and 18.9 per cent respectively).
- There was a 37.8 per cent increase in Welsh exports between 1999 and the latest four quarters. This compares with an increase of 45.4 per cent for the sum of the UK countries.
- Looking at quarter 3 2010 in isolation, total exports (by value) for Wales rose on the corresponding quarter in 2009 by £140 million (up 6.7 per cent) to £2,236 million. Eleven of the twelve devolved countries and English regions had increases over this period with the South West having the largest increase (up 40.3 per cent) and the North West the smallest (up 0.2 per cent). Scotland was the only region to experience a decreases in exports over this period (down 1.1 per cent). Overall, the value of exports for the sum of the UK countries increased by 14.1 per cent.
- Welsh exports for quarter 3 2010 were lower in value than in the previous quarter (down £63 million or 2.8 per cent), whilst the sum of the UK countries remained unchanged (in percentage terms). Five of the twelve devolved countries and English regions saw falls over this period, two remained unchanged and the remaining five had increases.
