Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture, June 2010
The latest National Statistics on land use, livestock numbers and labour employed on agricultural holdings produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 17 November 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
These statistics provide estimates for key variables across Wales as a whole. Equivalent statistics for each of the other UK countries are produced by the respective administrations and are detailed in the release. Data for the UK as a whole will be published by DEFRA on 16 December 2010.
The key points from the latest release are:
- The number of sheep and lambs remained largely unchanged between June 2009 and June 2010. The current total is 8.2 million.
- The total number of cattle and calves rose by 1 per cent between June 2009 and June 2010. This was attributable to a rise in non-dairy breeds.
- The number of principal farmers, spouses and partners remained relatively unchanged at 44,000 although there was a significant shift from full-time to part-time.
