Patients in Mental Health Hospitals and Units, 2010
The latest statistics on patients in mental health hospitals and units in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 23 November 2010.
Statistics include data as at 31 March 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29 June 2010.

At 31 March 2010:
Patients resident in hospitals and units for people with a mental illness in Wales:
- The number of patients had fallen by 16 per cent to 1,820 since 2000, although there was an increase compared with 2009.
- 19 per cent of patients were in hospitals with more than 100 patients compared to 40 per cent in 2000.
- 596 patients (33 per cent of patients) were detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 and other legislation compared with 468 patients (22 per cent) in 2000.
- There were fewer female patients than males (881 female, 939 male) and they tended to be older (58 per cent of female patients were aged 65 or over compared with 41 per cent of males).
Patients resident in hospitals and units for people with a learning disability in Wales:
- The number of patients had fallen by 70 per cent since 2000 to 110.
- The number of patients who had been resident for 2 years or more was 71, a decrease of 223 or 76 per cent since 2000.
- There were 38 female patients and 72 male patients compared to 148 and 218 respectively in 2000. There were 21 patients, 19 per cent of the total, detained under the Mental Heath Act 1983 and other legislation.
