Welsh Transport Statistics 2009 - Chapter 13: Great Britain Comparisons

The latest National Statistics on Great Britain Comparisons produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 18 November 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Great Britain Comparisons include data for England, Scotland and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 21 May 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of licensed road vehicles in Wales increased by 5 per cent between 2005 and 2009. There were increases of 4 per cent and 7 per cent in England and Scotland respectively.
  • In 2009, the proportion of households in Wales owning at least one car (77 per cent) was higher than England and Scotland (75 per cent and 72 per cent respectively).
  • Wales has a higher proportion of people using a car, van or minibus to travel to work (80 per cent in 2009) than England or Scotland (70 per cent).
  • It is estimated that the volume of motor vehicle traffic on all roads in Wales increased by 2 per cent between 2005 and 2009, with England and Scotland increasing by 1 per cent and 3 per cent respectively.
  • The number of local bus passenger journeys in Wales decreased by 3 per cent between 2005 and 2009, with England increasing by 13 per cent and Scotland experiencing a very small decline.
  • The number of road accident casualties per 100,000 population in Wales (345 in 2009) was lower than in England (380) but higher than Scotland (289).
