Gypsy and Traveller Caravan Count, July 2010
The latest statistics on the number of Gypsy and Traveller caravans in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 24 November 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Statistics on the number of Gypsy and Traveller caravans in Wales on both authorised and unauthorised sites are based on survey data collected by local authorities on the 8 July 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released in April 2010.
The key points from the latest release are:
- 18 of the 22 local authorities in Wales responded to the survey.
- There were 802 Gypsy and Traveller caravans reported in the 18 local authorities that responded to the survey in Wales on July 8 2010.
- In the 18 local authorities that responded there were 67 sites across Wales. The number of caravans ranged from 1 to 109 on each site.
Authorised sites:
- For the 17 authorities that participated in both July 2009 and July 2010 count, the number of caravans on authorised sites has increased by 15 per cent (90 caravans) since the July 2009 count. This increase is perhaps due to the count clashing with the Royal Welsh Show in July 2009 and not in July 2010.
Unauthorised sites:
- In the 18 local authorities that responded there were 70 caravans on unauthorised sites on land owned by Gypsies, accounting for 9 per cent of all caravans.
- A further 49 caravans (6 per cent) were on unauthorised sites on land not owned by Gypsies, in the 18 local authorities that responded.
Gypsy sites provided by local authorities:
- A total of 360 pitches on Gypsy sites provided by the 18 responding local authorities in Wales on 8th July 2010, 90 per cent of these pitches were occupied.
