Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, 2010
The latest National Statistics on Earnings produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 8 December 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Statistics on average gross weekly earnings in the UK down to Local Authority level include data for 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 12 November 2009.
The key points from the latest release are:
- Mean gross weekly earnings for full-time adults in Wales were £516.0 in April 2010, 86.2 per cent of the average for the UK as a whole (£598.3). Mean gross weekly earnings in both Wales and the UK as a whole increased by 1.9 per cent between 2009 and 2010. The percentage increase in Wales was the sixth highest out of the devolved countries and regions.
- Median gross weekly earnings for full-time adults in Wales were £451.1 in April 2010, 90.4 per cent of the average for the UK as a whole (£498.8). Median gross weekly earnings in Wales increased by 2.4 per cent between 2009 and 2010, compared to a 2.1 per cent increase across the UK as a whole. The percentage increase in Wales was the third largest out of the devolved countries and regions (behind Scotland and the West Midlands).
- Relative to the UK mean gross weekly earnings were slightly higher in 2010 (86.2 per cent) than they were in 2001 (85.8 per cent). Relative to the UK median gross weekly earnings were slightly lower in 2010 (90.4 per cent) than they were in 2001 (90.8 per cent).
- Wales had the 2nd lowest mean and the 3rd lowest median weekly full-time earnings in the UK in 2010. For the mean, Northern Ireland was ranked lower. For the median, the North East and Northern Ireland were ranked lower.
- Average (mean) full-time hourly earnings for women in Wales in April 2010 were 93.7 per cent of the average for men. This percentage was above that for the UK as a whole (84.5 per cent) and 2nd highest after Northern Ireland amongst the UK countries and English regions.
- Average (mean) part-time hourly earnings for women in Wales in April 2010 were 98.9 per cent of the average for men. This percentage was above that for the UK as a whole (88.2 per cent) and the highest amongst the UK countries and English regions.
- The gender pay gap on a full-time basis narrowed between 2009 and 2010 in both Wales and the UK. In Wales the gap has narrowed by 2.6 percentage points and in the UK it has narrowed by 0.9 percentage points. The part time gap in Wales narrowed by 4.1 percentage points, whilst it remained unchanged in the UK [NB: the part time pay gap below the UK level can be volatile].
- Mean full-time earnings for those living in Wales increased by 2.1 per cent (to £526.5) over the year. The level in December 2010 was 88.0 per cent of the UK average. Using the median measure, earnings for those in Wales increased by 2.7 per cent (to £456.4) over the year (91.5 per cent of the UK average).
