Welsh Transport Statistics 2009 – Chapter 3: Road Freight
The latest National Statistics on Road freight produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 2 December 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Statistics on Road freight include data up to 2009.
The key points from the latest release are:
- In 2009 there were an estimated 340 thousand tonnes of exports by road from Wales, a decrease of 18 thousand tonnes (5 per cent) since 2008.
- An estimated 203 thousand tonnes of imports were carried by road to Wales in 2009, 16 per cent less than in 2008.
- In 2009, 72 per cent of the tonnage of exports by road from Wales were to Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Germany.
- The same four countries together account for over four-fifths (80 per cent) of the tonnage of imports by road in 2009.
- In 2009, there were an estimated 32 thousand tonnes of foodstuffs exported by road from Wales. This was 32 thousand tonnes (50 per cent) less than in 2008.
- In 2009, around 46 million tonnes of goods were moved within Wales by UK registered HGVs and a further 24 million tonnes were moved between Wales and the rest of the UK.
- In 2009 almost three-quarters (70 per cent) of the tonnage of goods leaving Wales by road in UK registered HGV’s, were transported to the South West of England, the West Midlands and the North West of England (20 per cent, 22 per cent and 27 per cent respectively).
- In 2009, more than two-thirds (70 per cent)of the tonnage of goods entering Wales by road in UK registered HGVs came from the North West of England, the West Midlands and the South West of England (23 per cent, 25 per cent and 22 per cent respectively).
