Independent Schools’ Census, January 2010
The latest National Statistics on the Independent Schools’ Census produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 25 November 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Some of the information has already been published as part of ‘Schools’ Census 2010: Final Results’ (SDR 98/2010), but much is published here for the first time. The figures are based primarily on the STATS1 census returns for 2010. Several tables of historical information are also provided going back to the academic year 1998/99.
The key points from the latest release are:
- The percentage of full-time equivalent (FTE) pupils in independent schools in Wales has remained unchanged since 2002/03, at 2.0 per cent.
- The local authority that has the greatest number of independent schools is Cardiff, with 10. However, the highest percentage of FTE pupils in independent schools is in Monmouthshire, with 11.2 per cent, followed by Conwy with 5.2 per cent and then Cardiff with 4.9 per cent.
- At January 2010, 16.4 per cent of boys and 9.9 per cent of girls at independent schools were boarders.
- Pupil:Teacher ratios for independent schools are lower than in the maintained sector, the 2010 figure of 8.2 being less than half that of the maintained schools at 18.0.
- The incidence of pupils with statements of special educational needs was higher in independent schools, 4.1 per cent, than in maintained schools, 3.0 per cent. Conversely, the incidence of pupils with special educational needs identified by the school but no statements are lower in independent schools, 10.5 per cent, than in maintained schools, 18.3 per cent.
