The latest National Statistics on Class Sizes in Primary Schools in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 30 November 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on class sizes in primary schools include data for Wales as at September 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 26 November 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

Infant classes

  • 3.1 per cent of pupils (3,077 pupils) were in infant classes of over 30 pupils
  • 97 infant classes (2.4 per cent) in Wales had more than 30 pupils, with 85 of these classes having permissible exceptions. This is 2 fewer than at September 2009 when 99 classes (2.5 per cent) had over 30 pupils, of which 85 had permissible exceptions.

Junior classes

  • 6 per cent of pupils (7,474 pupils) were in junior classes of over 30 pupils
  • 236 junior classes (4.7 per cent) in Wales had more than 30 pupils, with 135 of these classes having permissible exceptions. This is 64 more than at September 2009 when 172 classes (3.4 per cent) had over 30 pupils, of which 113 had permissible exceptions.
