Welsh Index of Market Services, Quarter 1 2010

The latest National Statistics on Welsh Index of Market Services produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 10 August 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The Welsh Index of Market Services show the short-term movements in the output of service sector companies within Wales, including new data for the three months to March, relating to 2010 quarter 1. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 11 May 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The longer term trend for the Welsh Index of Market Services shows a fall of 1.9 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters with the previous four quarters. The UK figures show a fall of 3.4 per cent over the same period.
  • The fall over the longer term is largely accounted for by a reduction over four quarters in output of Business Services.

This quarter there have been several changes to the source data. As a result of this, caution should be taken when interpreting the 2010 quarter 1 estimates. We are therefore advising users to focus on the four quarter on four quarter (longer term) growth rates rather than quarter on quarter changes for this release.
