Consumer and Retail Price Indices (UK), December 2010

The latest National Statistics on Consumer Price Indices produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 18th January 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Consumer Price, Retail Price and Retail Price (excluding mortgage interest payments) indices include data to December 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 14th December 2010.

The Consumer Price Index is an internationally comparable measure of inflation and is also used to compare inflation rates across the European Union.

The key points from the latest release are:

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for December 2010:

  • In the 12 months to December 2010, the CPI rose by 3.7 per cent, up from 3.3 per cent for the 12 months to November 2010.
  • In December 2010, the CPI stood at 116.8 (2005=100).

The all items Retail Price Index (RPI) for December 2010:

  • In the 12 months to December 2010, the all items RPI rose by 4.8 per cent, up from 4.7 per cent for the 12 months to November 2010.
  • In December 2010, the all items RPI stood at 228.4 (January 1987=100).

The RPI excluding mortgage interest payments (RPIX) for December 2010:

  • In the 12 months to December 2010, the all items RPIX rose by 4.7 per cent, the same percentage increase as that for the 12 months to November 2010.
  • In December 2010, the RPIX stood at 227.5 (January 1987=100).
