Workplace Employment by Industry, 2001 to 2009

The latest bulletin on workplace employment by industry in Wales produced by the Welsh Government was released on 28 July 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website This bulletin is based on statistics from three different sources that are already in the public domain, and provides estimates of workplace employment (or total jobs) in Wales.  The analyses presented cover the aggregate of employees, the self employed and government supported trainees at a broad industrial level in Wales, with estimates also presented at sub-Wales levels.  By also including detail over time, the bulletin increases the information publicly available on jobs in Wales.

The key results are as follows.

  • In 2009 there was a higher proportion of employment in public administration, defence, education & health (which is not the same as the public sector) in Wales compared to the UK and a lower proportion in finance & business activities.
  • Between 2001 and 2009 there were increases in employment in 5 of the 7 industry sectors in Wales; with the finance & business activities sector seeing the biggest percentage increase in employment in Wales over this period (up 26 per cent). A similar pattern of change occurred across the UK as a whole. The remaining 2 sectors had falls with Production employment having the largest fall in both Wales and the UK, both down by 26 per cent.
  • Comparing areas within Wales, West Wales and the Valleys had a higher proportion of jobs in public administration, defence, education & health than East Wales and a lower proportion of jobs in finance & business activities.
  • There was substantial variation in the distribution of workplace employment between industries at the local authority level in Wales.
  • Between 2001 and 2010 workplace employment increased by 4 per cent in both Wales as a whole and the UK.

Detailed datasets will be added to StatsWales shortly.
