Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education in the UK 2009/10
Statistics on destinations of leavers from Higher Education in the United Kingdom include data for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for the period up to the academic year 2009/10. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 1 July 2010.
The key points from the latest release are:
First degree graduates from Welsh HEIs were more likely to be in employment six months after graduation than the previous year, although unemployment rates were the same and higher than prior to the recession. For full-time, first degree graduates whose destination was known:
- 63 per cent were in employment only (60 per cent in 2008/09);
- 8 per cent were in a combination of work and study (8 per cent in 2008/09);
- 18 per cent were in further study only (19 per cent in 2008/09); and
- 8 per cent were assumed to be unemployed (8 per cent in 2008/09).
The proportions entering each destination activity were broadly similar to those for graduates from all UK HEIs.
Welsh graduates and graduates from HEIs in Wales were more likely to stay in Wales than in previous years, although the figures remain much lower than the equivalent retention rates for Scotland, England and Northern Ireland (but higher than most English regions).
- For UK domiciled, full-time first degree graduates from Welsh HEIs reported as being in UK employment, 63 per cent were employed in Wales, up from 62 per cent in 2008/09 and from 58 per cent in 2005/06.
- Of the full-time, first degree graduates domiciled in Wales (prior to study) reported as being in UK employment, 75 per cent were employed in Wales, up from 73 per cent in 2008/09 and from 70 per cent in 2005/06.
