Welsh Transport Statistics, 2010 - Chapter 5: Motoring Offences
The latest National Statistics on Motoring Offences produced by the Welsh Government were released on 5 July 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Statistics on Motoring Offences include data up to 2009.
The key points from the latest release are:
- In 2009, there were around 75,000 motoring offences dealt with by court proceedings in Wales, 1 per cent more than in 2008.
- During 2009, vehicle insurance offences accounted for almost one-quarter (23 per cent) of all motoring offences proceedings at magistrates’ courts.
- There were 2900 more careless driver offences dealt with at magistrates’ courts during 2009 compared to 2008, this was a increase of 73 per cent.
- In 2009, men accounted for 80 per cent of motoring offence proceedings at magistrates’ courts.
- Almost a half (49 per cent) of all motoring offence proceedings at magistrates’ courts in Wales during 2009, were in the South Wales police force area.
- During 2009, of those found guilty of driving after consuming alcohol or taking drugs, more than one-third (35 per cent) were aged 21-29, with those aged 30-39 accounting for a further 22 per cent.
- In 2009 around 123,000 breath tests were carried out in Wales. 5 per cent of these tests had a positive result.
- In 2009, around 13,000 vehicle defect notices were issued in Wales. 57 per cent of these were complied with. Compliance rates varied throughout Wales, with more than four-fifths (82 per cent) complied with in the North Wales police force area, and around one-third (35 per cent) complied with in the Dyfed Powys police force area. Gwent saw an increase in their compliance percentage from 31 percent in 2008 to 73 per cent in 2009.
