Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, 2008
The latest annual National Statistics on earnings published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) were released on 14 November 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
The key points from the bulletin are:
- Mean gross weekly earnings for full-time adults in Wales were £ 498.1 in April 2008, 86.7 per cent of the average for the UK as a whole (£574.3). Gross weekly earnings in Wales increased by 5.5 per cent between 2007 and 2008, compared to a 4.4 per cent increase across the UK as a whole.
- Wales had the 3rd lowest mean and the 3rd lowest median weekly full-time earnings in the UK in 2008. In both cases, the North East and Northern Ireland were ranked lower.
- Average full-time hourly earnings for women in Wales in April 2008 were 87.3 per cent of the average for men. The percentage was above that for the UK as a whole (82.9 per cent) and the 3rd highest after Northern Ireland and the North East amongst the UK countries and regions.
- Full-time earnings for those living in Wales increased by 4.7 per cent (to £506.7) between 2007 and 2008. The level in April 2008 was 88.2 per cent of the UK average.
- On both a workplace and residence basis, full-time earnings in West Wales and the Valleys and East Wales increased by more than the UK average between April 2007 and April 2008.
- The area of Cardiff, Newport and the Vale of Glamorgan had the highest workplace earnings in Wales for 2008 at £551.0, the lowest workplace earnings were in the area of Powys and Monmouthshire at £457.8.
