Statistics on regional disposable income include data for the countries of the UK and the English regions and for sub-regions across the UK for the period up to calendar year 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 31 March 2010.
The key points for Wales from the latest release are:
- Headline gross disposable household income (GDHI) per head in Wales in 2009 was £13,484 or 87.9 per cent of the UK average, the same relative to the UK average as 2008. Having declined between 1995 and 1999, this proportion has increased overall between 2000 and 2009.
- GDHI per head in Wales in 2009 was the 3rd lowest amongst the devolved countries and English regions, ahead of the North East and Yorkshire and the Humber. This ranking changed in 2008 when Wales went from being the 2nd lowest to the 3rd lowest when Wales overtook Yorkshire & the Humber.
- Wales saw the fourth largest percentage increase in GDHI per head out of the UK countries and English regions between 1999 and 2009, up 48.0 per cent compared to a 44.4 per cent increase across the UK.
- GDHI per head in Wales increased by 2.6 per cent between 2008 and 2009, compared to a 2.5 per cent increase for the UK as a whole.
