Civil Partnerships, 2007
Statistics on civil partnerships include data for the UK for the period up to the end of 2007. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 June 2007.
The key points from the latest release are:
- Same-sex couples formed 294 civil partnerships (129 male and 165 female) in Wales in 2007, a fall from 560 civil partnerships registered in 2006.
- The total number of partnerships formed in Wales since the Act came into force in December 2005 is 921. Cardiff has seen the highest number of civil partnerships since 2005, with a total of 190 civil partnerships (20.6 per cent of all civil partnerships registered in Wales since the Act came into force).
- Although more women than men registered in same-sex civil partnerships in Wales in 2007 (56.1 per cent of all partnerships), in the previous year more men than women registered in same-sex civil partnerships (50.9 per cent).
- Male civil partners were older on average than female civil partners in 2007 (the mean age for males was 43.9 and 40.9 for females). However, the average age at registration fell for both sexes, from 47.9 in 2006 to 43.9 in 2007 for males, and from 42.7 in 2006 to 40.9 in 2007 for females.
- 11 per cent of men and 27 per cent of women registered in a civil partnership in Wales in 2007 had been in a previous marriage or civil partnership.

Note
The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into force on 5 December 2005 in the UK, the first day couples could give notice of their intention to form a civil partnership. The Act enables same-sex couples aged 16 and over to obtain legal recognition of their relationship. The first day that couples could normally form a partnership was 19 December 2005 in Northern Ireland, 20 December 2005 in Scotland and 21 December 2005 in England and Wales.
