Sickness absence in the NHS, Quarter Ending December 2010

The latest experimental statistics on sickness absence in the NHS produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 17 May 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on sickness absence include Welsh data for the period up to the end of December 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 17 February 2011.

Key results for the quarter ending December 2010

  • The sickness absence rate was 5.5 per cent, similar to the rate for the same period in 2009.
  • The sickness absence rate tends to peak during winter months.
  • Of the 7 Local Health Boards and 3 NHS Trusts, the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust had the highest sickness absence rate (6.6 per cent) and Public Health Wales NHS Trust had the lowest rate (3.8 per cent).
  • Of the 6 staff groups, the highest sickness absence rates were in the healthcare assistant and support worker (7.3 per cent) and ambulance (6.9 per cent) staff groups.
  • The lowest sickness absence rate was in the medical and dental staff group (1.5 per cent).
