UK Statistics Authority Website This statistical bulletin introduces a detailed on-line data resource that has been put together for the areas identified in the Wales Spatial Plan.

The Spatial Plan is based on a set of guiding themes that apply across Wales.  However, it is recognised that there are differences in terms of how results will be achieved in the different parts of Wales, and so six distinct areas within Wales have been identified in the plan.  The data resource is available as a set of themed spreadsheets for each of these areas, along with a spreadsheet for each theme, showing all the areas alongside each other.

The data resource covers a wide range of data items, and just a small selection of key points is given below.

  • Population growth since 1981 has been strongest in Central Wales, North East Wales and Pembrokeshire Haven.
  • Employment rates in 2006 were highest in North East Wales, and lowest in Swansea Bay and the Heads of the Valleys area within South East Wales.
  • In the 2006-07 academic year, the percentage of pupils achieving 5 A* to C grades at GCSE level was highest in Central Wales.
  • In September 2006, there was little difference between the areas in the number of general practitioners per head of the population, with slightly higher rates in the more rural areas.
  • Average daily rainfall levels were highest in North West Wales, both in 2006 and historically.
