Homelessness

Information about local authorities’ decisions about homelessness in Wales collected via the quarterly WHO12 return.

Statistics published on 3 April 2012 show:

Household acceptances

  • Generally, the number of households accepted as homeless fell from the peak in 2004-05 through to the end of 2009 but have since been increasing. However, the October to December 2011 quarter  saw a decrease of 9 per cent compared to the same quarter of 2010 and the lowest number of acceptances in a quarter (1,395) since October to December 2009 (Table 1). The figures are influenced by seasonal factors however, and may represent a quarterly fluctuation rather than a change in trend.

Households in Temporary Accommodation

  • In general, the use of temporary accommodation has been falling since 2005-06, although numbers had been increasing since December 2009 as a consequence of the increase in acceptances. As with acceptances there was a decrease in this quarter with 2,530 households in temporary accommodation at the end of December, down by 3 per cent on December 2010.
  • The 245 households in bed and breakfast accommodation at the end of December 2011 represent a 5 per cent increase on December 2010. Of these, 20 households (9 per cent) contained children, which has also increased over the last two years.
