House building

The House Building statistics provide quarterly data on new build housing supply, including both starts and completions, and are available on this page. Links are given below to the latest statistical release and a range of data tables.

Latest data on house building

The quarterly publication consists of a report and a set of accompanying excel data tables detailing key high level changes since the previous quarter. The tables and report are together known as the statistical release.

See latest Statistical Release -  House Building: June Quarter 2012, England published 16 August 2012.

Live tables on house building

The new data published in the release are also incorporated into the detailed data tables (known as 'live tables') which provide further breakdowns, including house building statistics for local authorities. There are also tables with data on house building going back further in time than the tables forming part of the release.

The live tables also incorporate revisions if improved information is provided at a later date and will always contain the latest data, whereas previous statistical releases are not revised in the light of new data, but left as they were at publication.

Notes and definitions

Alternative data on house building

The Department for Communities and Local Government also produces Net supply of housing statistics. This is an annual measure of the change in the number of homes taking into account gains through new build completions but also losses through demolitions. Other activities such as conversion of a house to flats are also taken into account.

The new build component of these net supply statistics is an independent measure, it is not the sum of the quarterly completions figures linked above.

See Net Supply of Housing statistics.

An explanation of the differences between these two sources of housing supply data, together with advice on the appropriate series to use for different purposes, can be found in the 'Related statistics' section of the latest House Building Statistical Release.
