Summary
The latest national statistics on house building were released under the auspices of the UK Statistics Authority on 19 November 2009.
Statistics in this release present figures on new build housing starts and completions in England. Figures for the UK and constituent countries are also available in the accompanying tables.
The latest statistics report on the period July to September 2009 and update those previously released on 28 October 2009.
Key points from the latest release are:
- There were an estimated 25,820 seasonally adjusted housing starts in England in the September quarter 2009, up 18 per cent on the previous quarter and 16 per cent higher than the September quarter 2008. This is the third successive quarterly rise in seasonally adjusted housing starts.
- Private enterprise housing starts (seasonally adjusted) were 21 per cent higher than in the June quarter 2009, and 20 per cent higher than in the September quarter 2008.
- Annual housing starts figures for England totalled 83,080 in the 12 months to September 2009, down 35 per cent compared with the 12 months to September 2008 and 55 per cent below their 2005-06 peak.
- Housing completions in England were down by four per cent to an estimated 29,050 (seasonally adjusted) in the September quarter 2009 compared to the previous quarter. Compared with the September quarter 2008, completions were down by 12 per cent.
- Private enterprise housing completions (seasonally adjusted) were eight per cent lower in the September quarter 2009 than the June quarter 2009, and 18 percent lower than in the September quarter 2008.
- Annual housing completions in England totalled 122,800 in the 12 months to September 2009, down by 21 per cent compared with the 12 months to September 2008.
