The Department for Communities and Local Government's Areas of Town Centre Activity and Retail Cores project generates a nationally consistent method for defining boundaries around concentrations of activities typically associated with town centres in England and Wales. Within these boundaries, statistics are available on employees in retail and office industries, and retail and office floorspace and rateable value. The consistency of the boundaries generated by the project allows easy comparison of the statistics across England and Wales.
Although the boundaries and statistics have been created using a statistical methodology and do not correspond to policy boundaries as defined in local development plans, they will change over time as the underlying economic data changes, reflecting growth and decline of these areas of activity.
Statistics for Areas of Town Centre Activity and their Retail Cores are available from the Department's State of the Cities Database (external link).
