Statistics for local areas

Defra offers a number of resources to help with rural-urban analysis.

Local level data

These provide access to information about the rural and urban aspects of local areas. The spreadsheet at the bottom of this page contains statistics for local authority districts with both regional and national comparisons. This includes:

  • Population
  • Claimant counts
  • Insolvency rates
  • Business numbers by industry and size
  • Average house prices

The underlying data are also provided, though some of the information has been suppressed to protect confidentiality. The data will be updated annually, with the next update due in early summer 2013.

Maps
This is a selection of maps for the whole of England as well as for regions. They show either the official rural-urban definition or the local authority rural-urban classification.

Rural focus reports
These reports are published for every local authority in England. They contain a range of statistics from the 2001 Census for the urban and rural areas within each authority, including information on populations, household composition, qualifications and economic activity.
