Food
This area provides information related to the environmental, social and economic impacts of food production and consumption. We provide a mix of National Statistics, Official Statistics and Unofficial Statistics produced free from any political interference, according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Food statistics were reviewed by the UK Statistics Authority in June 2011 and you can download the report here, report number 123 dated 30 June 2011.
Regular Publications
- Family food is a National Statistics annual report, with accompanying datasets, detailing statistical information on household purchases of food and drink. It is published each December.
- Food statistics pocketbook is a concise round up of statistics on food covering the economic, social and environmental aspects of the food we eat (excluding agriculture). It is published each September, updated six months later as more data becomes available.
- Food chain total factor productivity monitors productivity growth in the UK food chain compared to the wider economy. It is published bi-annually, in January – annual provisional estimates, in July annual final estimates.
Other Publications
- Food transport indicators is a National Statistics publication and shows the environmental and social impacts of food transport for the UK. Last published in January 2012 and includes 2010 data. The next release has not been scheduled.
- Attitudes and behaviours around sustainable food purchasing is a report showing the link between consumers’ attitudes and behaviours towards sustainable food purchasing, enabling Defra to re-engage with consumers in understanding the drivers around purchasing behaviours
- Estimating Food and Drink Elasticities is a report which focuses on how UK consumers’ food and drink purchases respond to food price and expenditure changes and reports elasticity of demand.
