Farm labour and wage statistics report

This annual report is primarily produced to inform the Agricultural Wages Board (AWB) negotiations. However, we hope it will also be useful to anyone seeking information on agricultural labour and wages. The AWB negotiations set the minimum wage for agricultural workers that are published in the Agricultural Wages Order each October. The report consists of statistics produced by Defra, the Welsh Assembly and the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Historically Defra’s survey of the Earnings and Hours of Agricultural and Horticultural Workers survey collected much of the information needed for the report. In 2011 the survey was reviewed and stopped because a suitable alternative data source was identified. The ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) is the new source of data on the earnings of agricultural workers. The new methodology is described in chapter 4 of the Farm Labour and Wage statistics publication for 2012.

Defra survey of the earnings and hours of agricultural and horticultural workers in England and Wales

This survey is no longer run following a review that showed that other published information would meet users needs. The final survey ran in March 2010 and collected information from around 600 holdings in England and Wales. The final statistics notice and previously published datasets are available from the downloads area below, but will no longer be updated.
