Travel and Transport

The Travel and Transport theme provides information on statistics relating to all modes of travel and transport within Great Britain. Great Britain covers England, Scotland and Wales.

The Department for Transport (DfT) publishes a wide range of statistics, covering all forms of transport including cars, lorries, freight and public transport. Further statistics are gathered on traffic and accidents, walking and cycling, and travel to work and school.

The Department of Transport (DfT) is also responsible for collecting and providing an analysis of transport and travel trends. One of the sources used is the National Travel Survey, which is a continuous household survey to provide personal travel information.

Statistical data are presented in a number of publications including Transport Trends (DfT), an annual overview and analysis of transport and travel trends in Great Britain and Transport Statistics for Great Britain, which supplies a picture of transport usage.

Rail statistics are produced independently by the Office for Rail Regulation (ORR).

Aviation statistics are collected from UK airports and UK airlines by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
