Summary

The latest statistics on the extent of retail development in England, produced by Communities and Local Government, were released on Friday 21 November 2008.

This release presents statistics on the amount of retail floorspace built during 2006 within town centres and within edge of town centres in England.

The key points from the release are:

  • In England: During 2006, a total of 1.2 million m2 of retail floorspace was built in England, a 14 per cent decrease on the amount of floorspace built in 2005 and nearly half of the amount built in 1990. However, the amount of floorspace built can vary con-siderably year on year.
  • In town centres: Of the 1.2 million m2 retail floorspace built in 2006, 26 per cent was built within town centres in England and 42 per cent was built within town centre and edge-of-centre locations (de-fined by a buffer of 300m around the town centre).
