Maritime statistics cover the following:

Ports: total annual foreign and domestic freight traffic at all UK ports, with detailed statistics on cargo types and routes for all major ports in the UK (generally those handling over one million tonnes every year)

Passengers: annual international and domestic passenger traffic at UK ports, and monthly international sea passenger information

Waterborne freight in the UK: this includes freight traffic around the coast of the UK, on inland waterways, and one-port traffic (to and from UK offshore installations and sea dredged materials)

Shipping: end year statistics on the numbers and tonnage of ships registered in the UK, ships owned by UK companies, and ships in the world fleet. Plus, tables on revenue and expenditure of UK shipping, ship prices, accidents and search and rescue operations

Technical Data
Information is collected as follows:

Port traffic information is collected by the Department for Transport (DfT) from ports and shipping lines or agents through a statutory survey. The information relates to all cargoes loaded or unloaded by ship at ports in the UK

Sea passengers statistics (the number of passenger arrivals and departures at UK ports and associated number of sailings, by route) are collected by the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Scottish Executive from UK ferry operators

Waterborne freight in the United Kingdomcombines Department for Transport (DfT) port traffic statistics with data from surveys of barge operators. In addition, occasional benchmark surveys are carried out giving details of the commercial inland waterway network and associated wharves and craft

Statistics on shipping fleets are in general derived from world fleet data supplied by Lloyds Register Fairplay, and fall outside the scope of National Statistics

Glossary

Container
Special boxes for carrying freight designed to allow cargos to be transferred easily from one mode of transport to another without unloading. They are built to standard designs and are capable of stacking and repeated use.

Maritime means relating to ships and shipping, or seafarers, including the carriage of goods or passengers by sea and ports.

Port
A port is a facility for receiving ships and transferring cargo and or sea passengers.

Ro-Ro
Ro-Ro refers to roll on roll off sea craft or their cargo.

Waterborne freight
Waterborne freight covers freight traffic that is moved by sea, river or canal.

Wharf
A wharf is a landing place or pier where ships may tie up and load or unload.
