The statistics are based on Inheritance Tax returns, and more information on this can be found in the published commentary.

This publication is based on a revised methodology as described in the latest release. The changes to the methodology follow a user consultation (for more information please see the published consultation proposal and 'consultation results'. HMRC is grateful to all who replied to the consultation and hope that the new publication better meets your needs, but would welcome further feedback via the contacts page or you can send HMRC feedback using the feedback form.
