The School Census covers nursery, primary, middle, secondary and special schools. This census takes place each term and covers the maintained sector in England which includes community, foundation, voluntary-aided and voluntary-controlled schools. Service Children’s Education schools, both primary and secondary, will participate on a voluntary basis.

- secondary schools include middle-deemed secondary schools, CTCs and academies
- nursery schools refer to both maintained and direct grant nursery schools.
- special schools refer to both maintained and non-maintained special schools including hospital special schools.
