Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)
The website uses Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) and requires the use of a SVG reader. Most newer browsers, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Firefox contain support for SVG. If you are using a browser which does not support SVG, a download is available from Adobe although other readers are available. please note ONS is not responsible for the content of external websites, if you choose to download third party software you must ensure that the software is safe to use and conforms to any software policy that you are bound by and will not invalidate any warranties.
JavaScript
JavaScript improves the general navigation within the site, and is essential in the construction of custom tables. To switch on JavaScript in Internet Explorer; from the Tools menu, select Internet Options. Click on the security tab then press the "custom level" button. Scroll down the list of options until you get to Scripting. Ensure "Active Scripting" is set to "enable". In Netscape Navigator use the Edit menu, Preferences, Advanced.
Cookies
Cookies are required by the site to enable some print and download functions and also if the user wishes their PC to store their registered username and password, which will allow the user to sign in without having to remember or enter these credentials. To switch on Cookies in Internet Explorer; from the Tools menu, select Internet Options. Click on the security tab then press the "custom level" button. Scroll down the list of options until you get to Cookies. Ensure "Allow cookies that are stored on your computer" is set to "enable".

Images
Images are used extensively throughout the site to aid navigation and present results and maps. All users are advised to enable images within their browser.
To switch on Images in Internet Explorer; from the Tools menu, select Internet Options. Click on the advanced tab and scroll down the list of options until you get to Multimedia. Ensure the "Show Pictures" checkbox is ticked.
In Netscape Navigator use the Edit menu, Preferences, Privacy & Security, Images.
Popups
Popups described here are uninitiated opening of windows. The Neighbourhood Statistics web site uses a limited number of popups to present a range of information to assist people in using the site, such as presenting search results and information on services. Without popups enabled, you might find that that the navigation options you choose do not function correctly.
How to Enable Popups
If you are using the latest version of Internet Explorer, then you can enable popups for this site within the Pop-up Blocker option in the Tools drop-down from the menu bar.
If you are using Firefox, then popups can be enabled for this site through the Web Features tab of the Options option in the Tools drop-down from the menu bar.
If using the Google popup blocker, then simply click on the button in your Google toolbar that describes how many Pop-ups are blocked (which should change the button to read 'Site popups allowed').
For those users on a corporate LAN where personal configuration of popup blocking control is not permitted, please refer to your Systems Administrator.
