The Neighbourhood Statistics (NeSS) Data Exchange (NDE) is the name given to the Application Programming Interface (API) designed for NeSS. An online service designed to make it easier to interrogate and engage with the NeSS Datastore. Using machine to machine technology, it will speed up and simplify data requests and still allow access to over 400 geographically referenced datasets, free of charge. For more information and a brief overview of the service please read the guide ...
Please note - due to memory constraints there is a 10,000 cell limit to any single extraction request from the NDE. We would ask that NDE users take this limit into account when extracting data. Experience has shown that the vast majority of extractions fall below this limit.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reserves the right to block any user or users whose actions, whether intentionally or otherwise, threaten the stability of the NDE API or the Neighbourhood Statistics site.
If you, or your IP is blocked, there is no obligation on the part of ONS to reinstate access to the web service, and no guarantee that any requests to reinstate access will be agreed to regardless of the circumstances leading to the blocking.
Before you begin to extract data from NDE:

NeSS are pleased to announce the release of data from the 2011 Census of England and Wales. In most cases this data is available down to Output Area (OA) level.
Geographic Hierarchies
A new geographic hierarchy, The 2011 Statistical Geography Hierarchy has been created to take into account changes to some Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs) and Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs)
In addition there is a new 2011 Administrative hierarchy to take into account ward boundaries in place at the time of the 2011 Census.
The hierarchy Ids for these are:
The 2011 Statistical Geography Hierarchy is now the default geographic hierarchy within Neighbourhood Statistics
Full details of the changes happening as a result of the 2011 Census, together with other 2011 Census Geography Products can be found here.
As a result of these changes, some areas which were present in the 2001 Statistical Hierarchy will not exist in the 2011 version. In addition there will be areas in the 2011 Statistical Geography Hierarchy which did not exist previously, so it may not be possible to produce a direct comparison between 2001 data and 2011 data where these changes have taken place.
Alternative sources of 2011 Census data may be via NOMIS or the Office for National Statistics website
To help you get started with NDE we have devised a QuickStart Guide. This guide contains details of:
The Technical Implementation Guide provides information on approaches and methods for using the Neighbourhood Statistics Data Exchange, together with full details of Discovery and Delivery commands.
It is recommended that you use the Technical Implementation Guide as a reference to enable you to get the most effective use from the NeSS Data Exchange
ONS Geography produce a range of products available to download free of charge. These include boundary files, look-up files, Area Classification information and much more. These products can be obtained from the Open Geography Portal
