Details

The operational phase of a new contract to provide civilian search and rescue helicopter (SARH) services in the United Kingdom commenced in April 2015. These new arrangements, managed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), are taking over from the previous mixture of military and Coastguard SAR services.

The new arrangement means the department will now be responsible for publishing official statistics on the civilian SARH services. This is the second release in a new experimental statistics series covering these civilian SARH operations.

In October to December 2015:

  • there were 373 civilian SARH taskings, with just under half involving rescue or recovery
  • just over half of taskings were land-based
  • Caernarfon was the busiest civilian base with 61 taskings
  • Stornoway was the quietest with 16 taskings

A short user feedback survey ran until 31 January 2016. Responses have now been collated and you can find a summary of the feedback, as well as a response from the department in the response to user feedback document.

Ministry of Defence has historically published a national statistics series on military search and rescue helicopter activity. MOD continued to publish statistics on military activity until February 2016, in line with the broader transfer of SARH responsibilities from the MOD to the department.
