Details
DfT statistics on light rail and tram systems in England are collected to inform the development and monitoring of light rail policy. Figures are updated annually and present information on usage, infrastructure and revenue for the 8 systems which are urban and primarily surface-running.
In the year to end March 2015:
- light rail use in England continued to rise with record numbers of passenger journeys and vehicle miles since comparable records began in 1983
- 239.8 million passenger journeys were made in total on the 8 systems, a 5.6% increase on the previous year
- 59% of passenger journeys were in London, on Docklands Light Railway and London Tramlink – passenger journeys on Docklands Light Railway have been increasing since the early 1990s and increased by 8.5% in 2014/15 to 110.2 million
- overall light rail and tram revenue increased by 4.4% in real terms to £307.6 million in 2014/15 when compared with 2013/14
- revenue per light rail and tram journey decreased in real terms by 1.2% to 128 pence per journey
