Rail statistics
Information and statistics on the national rail system.
Statistical information on the national rail system in Great Britain.
Most statistics about the rail industry are published by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) and other organisations such as the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB). Therefore, a number of the statistics that appear in this series are originally published elsewhere. In these cases, more up-to-date and more detailed statistics than those published here may be available from the organisation that produces them.
Department for Transport publishes the:
- rail passenger numbers and crowding on weekdays in major cities in England and Wales
- National Rail Travel Survey (NRTS), a survey of passenger trips on the national rail system in Great Britain that provides information about who uses the rail network, where, when and for what purposes
- rail usage, infrastructure and performance (originally published by ORR)
- rail finance (originally published by ORR)
- rail freight (originally published by ORR)
- rail accidents and safety (originally published by RSSB)
The department also publishes statistics on public attitudes to train services.
All the statistics discussed on this page refer to national rail only. DfT also produces separate statistics on light rail and trams.

Technical information
National statistics
The rail passenger numbers and crowding statistics published in this series are National Statistics. These statistics were assessed by the UK Statistics Authority (UKSA) and confirmed as National Statistics in July 2013.
All other statistics published in this series are Official Statistics. The department’s view is that all statistics which are not designated as National Statistics are robust and have been produced to a suitable standard.
