Driving tests and instructor statistics

Statistics and data about the number of theory tests and driving tests taken in Great Britain, pass rates, and the number of instructors.

Department for Transport produces information on the number of driving and riding theory and practical tests undertaken in Great Britain, and also statistics on driving instructors.

The department are proposing to reduce the release schedule for this publication from quarterly to annual, with the accompanying set of data tables still being updated on a quarterly basis. If you wish to comment on this proposal, please contact us.

See this index for a complete list of related data tables.

All of the statistics are derived from data held by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) which administers the driving test scheme in Great Britain.

The content and the processes used for gathering the Incident Statistics set of data (compulsory basic training and direct access scheme) are currently under review, therefore there will be no update of this data for the foreseeable future. Any freedom of information requests concerning this data set should be sent to the FOI team at DVSA.

Data tables at test centre level are published by DVSA.

Make a Freedom of Information request to DVSA if you need more detailed statistics. If you’re a driving instructor, you can send a request for your personal statistics.
