Travel, Transport and Tourism
Our Travel, Transport and Tourism domain oversees the regulation of statistics on all modes of travel and transport, transport infrastructure and tourism. Official statistics in this area include: travel patterns and distances travelled using various modes of transport; the use of private and public transport; and international visits to the UK. These statistics are produced at a UK-level, for example by the Department for Transport, the Office for National Statistics and the Office for Rail and Road, and at a regional level, for example by the devolved nations.
The statistics are used to inform planning and resource allocations by government, including the devolved administrations, local government, business, and third sector organisations. They are also used by government, the media, charities and other third sector organisations to monitor the success of government policies and targets, for example in the case of road safety statistics.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on Travel, Transport and Tourism, not just in terms of how we use transport in our daily lives individually, but also in terms of how statistics on the topic are produced. For example, the face-to-face International Passenger Survey, usually carried out at airports, was suspended, and producers have had to adapt quickly to find new ways to collect data. We are working with producers to understand the longer term impacts to statistics in this area.
Contact our regulators for this domain Louisa McCutcheon, Mary Cowan and Sarah Kilday for more information.
Planned Work
We are working on project reviewing statistics about the accessibility of transport in the UK. We are exploring whether the statistical system is providing the accurate, coherent and comprehensive information that those relying on statistics in this area need. If you would like to find out more, please take look at our project outline.
