A number of data collections have been implemented to support incident management. The collections were activated at short notice and the content of the collections has evolved as the incident has developed. The data collected is classified as management information. It has been collected on a daily basis with a tight turn round time. No revisions have been made to the dataset. Any analysis of the data should be undertaken with this in mind.

Note that the data is collected on a daily basis, and the publications below are updated monthly, weekly and daily. The following definitions cover the data items used in all three of the following publications.

This monthly publication file provides a trust level breakdown of the five admission indicators which are provided at regional and national level each day on this page of our website. The admission indicators have been published daily since 22 September 2020 and contain a time series which starts on 1 August 2020 and that time series is added to each day with the release of data. The indicators are derived from various data components within the daily Covid sitrep and the data for these components was deemed to be of sufficient quality from 1 August 2020 for such indicator construction.

Please note that the government dashboard published here https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/ includes an estimate for missing data, of 597 Covid patients for Barts, on 9 April 2020 which increases the London and national figure by that amount. The data published here does not include any estimates for any data items for Barts for that day.

Data quality notes:

• On 13 March 2021 University College London Hospitals NHS FT submitted erroneous data for numbers of non-Covid patients in adult critical care beds which impacts on the national figures. Please bear this in mind when interpreting this data item for that day.
• On 27 March 2021 Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS FT submitted erroneous data for numbers of Covid patients in beds which impacts on the regional and national figures for that day.
• On 31 July and 01 August 2021, East Suffolk and North Essex NHS FT submitted erroneous data for numbers of Covid patients in beds which impacts on the regional and national figures for those days.
• Following the cessation of the Q4 National Independent Sector Provider (ISP) contract, significantly fewer ISP providers submitted a return from 1 April 2021 onward, hence there is a small step change downwards on a number of tabs evident on this date. The collection of daily acute ISP returns stopped completely on 7 April 2021, so data for 7 April 2021 onward do not contain an acute ISP element.

Weekly publication of COVID-19 admissions and bed occupancy data

This file contains Covid data on measures of:-

• hospital admissions
• number of beds occupied by Covid patients
• number of MV beds (capable of supporting mechanical ventilation) occupied by Covid patients
• number of Adult G&A beds: occupied by Covid patients; occupied by non-Covid patients; unoccupied; and unoccupied, available to non-Covid patients
• number of Adult Critical Care beds: occupied by Covid patients; occupied by non-Covid patients; unoccupied; and unoccupied, available to non-Covid patients

For the majority of items relating to Adult G&A and critical care beds the data is from 17 November 2020. These data items were first collected on 10 November 2020 and have been deemed of usable quality as from the 17th. The unoccupied, available to non-Covid patients data items were first collected on 15 December 2020 and have been deemed to be of usable quality as from 13 January 2021. Adults represent 99% of Covid admissions to hospital.

For other items, the file provides trust level information from 1 August 2020 up to the latest week. This trust data is consistent with the daily release of admissions data, which is at regional and national level. The methodology for construction of these measures at trust level is the same at regional and national level (see PDF above).

Data quality notes:

• On 13 March 2021 and 27 December 2021 University College London Hospitals NHS FT submitted erroneous data for numbers of non-Covid patients in adult critical care beds which impacts on the national figures. Please bear this in mind when interpreting this data item for that day.
• On 27 March 2021 Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS FT submitted erroneous data for numbers of Covid patients in beds which impacts on the regional and national figures for that day.

• On 26 December 2021 a total of 5 acute trusts did not submit data (Whittington Health, Bradford Teaching, East Cheshire, Northern Care Alliance, Hampshire Hospitals). Three of these trusts (Whittington Health, Bradford Teaching, Northern Care Alliance) did not submit data in respect of the previous day’s return. Data submissions on 24 December showed that these 5 acute trusts had a total of 281 Covid patients on that date. The impact of the missing data submissions should be borne in mind when interpreting both the level of national and regional figures and the recent trend.
• On 27 December 2021 a total of 3 acute trusts did not submit data (County Durham and Darlington, East Cheshire, and Buckinghamshire).  These 3 trusts had 98 Covid patients based on their respective latest submissions.  In addition there were a number of  NHS MHLDA trusts which did not submit data on that date. These trusts reported in the region of 120 Covid patients on their latest submissions. The impact of the missing data submissions should be borne in mind when interpreting both the level of national and regional figures and the recent trend.

A supplementary analysis of confirmed COVID-19 patients who are being treated primarily for COVID-19 can be found in the file below. Note that this covers acute providers only.

The majority of inpatients with Covid-19 are admitted as a result of the infection. A subset of those who contract Covid in the community and are asymptomatic, or exhibited relatively mild symptoms that on their own are unlikely to warrant admission to hospital, will then be admitted to hospital to be treated for something else and be identified through routine testing. However these patients still require their treatment in areas that are segregated from patients without Covid, and the presence of Covid can be a significant co-morbidity in many cases. Equally, while the admission may be due to another primary condition, in many instances this may have been as a result of contracting Covid in the community. For example research has shown that people with Covid are more likely to have a stroke (Stroke Association); in these cases people would be admitted for the stroke, classified as ‘with’ Covid despite having had a stroke as a result of having Covid.

The headline published numbers in publications to date have been “inpatients with confirmed Covid” without differentiating between those in hospital “for” Covid and those in hospital “with” Covid. Recognising the combination of high community infections rates, with the reduced likelihood of admission for those who contract Covid in the community and are fully vaccinated, the Covid SitRep was enhanced in June 2021 to add a requirement for providers to distinguish between those being primarily treated ‘for’ Covid and those ‘with’ Covid but for whom the primary reason for being in hospital was non-Covid related. In practice this distinction is not always clear at the point of admission when the patient’s record has not been fully clinically coded. In light of this, trusts have been asked to provide this “for” and “with” split on a ‘best endeavours’ basis.

This file contains Covid data on measures of hospital admissions and the number of beds occupied by Covid patients and the number of MV beds (beds capable of supporting mechanical ventilation) occupied by Covid patients. It provides regional and national level information from 1 August up to the latest day.

Data quality notes:

• • • On 27 March 2021 Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS FT submitted erroneous data for numbers of Covid patients in beds which impacts on the regional and national figures for that day.

• • • 26 December 2021.  Five acute trusts did not submit data (Whittington Health, Bradford Teaching, East Cheshire, Northern Care Alliance, Hampshire Hospitals). Three of these trusts (Whittington Health, Bradford Teaching, Northern Care Alliance) also did not submit data in respect of 25 December. Data submissions on 24 December showed that these 5 acute trusts had a total of 281 Covid patients on that date.

    • 2 January 2022.  Three acute trusts did not submit (Warrington, North Bristol, and Queen Victoria) and Leighton Hospital was missing for Mid Cheshire. Previous data submissions showed that these trusts reported a total of 259 Covid patients.
    • 29 January 2022.  Two acute trusts did not submit data (Northern Care Alliance and East Cheshire), and Bedfordshire Hospitals only submitted one site. Previous data submissions showed that these missing sites reported a total of 355 Covid patients.

The following summary shows the initial data we collected at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. The current collection mechanism commenced on 20 March 2020, but a limited amount of information was collected prior to that on other collection systems. The figures produced in these earlier periods were affected by data completeness.
