GP Patient Survey

The GP Patient Survey assesses patients’ experience of healthcare services provided by GP practices, including experience of access, making appointments, the quality of care received from healthcare professionals, patient health and experience of NHS services when their GP practice was closed. The survey also includes a number of questions assessing patients’ experience of NHS dental services.

The results of the survey are published by Ipsos MORI on behalf of NHS England and NHS Improvement on the GP Patient Survey website.

The 2022 GP Patient Survey launched on Monday 10 January, with fieldwork continuing for three months. The results will be published in summer 2022.

Latest publication

These are the latest Official Statistics for England for the GP Patient Survey:

This presents the results of aggregated data collected by postal and online surveys from January 2021 to the end of March 2021.

An infographic of the latest data is available here:

In addition, NHS England and NHS Improvement has developed information packs for Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) presenting the latest results specific for local areas, helping to inform commissioners about their patients’ experiences at local practices. These are available on the main GP Patient Survey website:

Trends

There are four comparable years of data for most of the GP Patient Survey questions (2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021). There are a small number of questions that can be compared back to 2012 as they were not affected by survey changes in 2018 or 2021.

Changes to the 2021 survey

The questionnaire was redeveloped in 2021 to reflect changes to primary care services as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effect of which should be taken into account when looking at results over time. For more information on the redevelopment of the questionnaire please view the technical annex.

Indicators

The 2021 results will be used to update a number of indicators that form part of existing national NHS reporting frameworks. These are the:

Updates to the NHS Outcomes Framework and CCG Outcomes Indicator Set will be produced by NHS Digital.

Updates to the NHS Oversight Framework will be produced and published separately by NHS England and NHS Improvement.

CQC Insight Monitoring tool

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) will use the results from this survey in their regulation, monitoring and inspection of GP practices in England. They will use data from the survey in their CQC Insight monitoring tool, which provides inspectors with an assessment of how GP practices are performing and identifies any changes over time. The survey data will be used to inform inspections and as a key source of evidence to support the judgements and ratings of GP practices. For more information please visit the CQC website.
