Labour Market and Welfare
he Labour Market and Welfare theme includes statistics measuring different aspects of work and jobs and covers people’s employment, working patterns and the types of work they do. The theme also covers any earnings and benefits they receive.
In 2021/22, we published our findings on a range of labour market and welfare statistics, including;
- confirmation of National Statistics designation for UK Employment and Jobs statistics (April 2022) and Women in Northern Ireland statistics (February 2022)
- our rapid review of the Over 50s Lifestyle Study (March 2022)
- our assessment of the Living Costs and Food Survey (July 2021)
- our systemic review of income-based poverty statistics (May 2021)
We continue to explore public concerns/queries about labour market and welfare statistics through our casework, working alongside statistic producers. For example, in February 2022, we commented on the repeated misuse of employment statistics by the Prime Minister.
In 2022/23, we will follow-up our recommendations from our income-based poverty review. As the cost-of-living crisis unfolds, we want to ensure that statistics used to help measure the impact on household incomes, in particular, for those people living in poverty are robust, accurate and timely.
We will also continue to provide regulatory support to producers who are transforming other statistics, such as Universal Credit and the Labour Force Survey. In April 2022, we started a new project working with the Office for National Statistics (ONS) as it works to transform the Labour Force Survey. As part of this, we are keen to speak with people and organisations who use data from the Labour Force Survey to understand more about the potential impact of the proposed changes. Please do get in touch, if you are interested and would like to hear more on this.
