This Statistical First Release presents information on the number of Education Maintenance Allowances (EMAs) awarded to students aged 16 and 17 in further education in Welsh schools and further education institutions. It also provides a final update to the provisional figures published in SDR 8/2006.

The data, based on applications received by 25 August 2006, were extracted by the Student Loans Company (SLC) on 31 August 2006.

In previous years these data have been published as an "Experimental" series. Statistical First Releases on EMA Wales have now been brought into the scope of National Statistics. For further information please see Annexe 1 of SDR 115/2006.

Key results:

  • By 25th August 2006, a total of 28,110 EMA Wales applications had been received.
  • 25,620 (91 per cent) applications received were approved, whilst 930 (3 per cent) applications were rejected.
  • 80 per cent of approved applications were from students with a household income of £20,270 or less and thus were entitled to the maximum EMA of £30 per week.
  • 14,110 (55 per cent) of approved applications in 2005/06 were for 16 year olds compared with 14,070 in 2004/05.
  • Retention bonuses were paid in September to 7,960 students continuing their studies from 2004/05.
