Welsh Transport Statistics 2007 - Chapter 14: Great Britain comparisons
The latest National Statistics on Great Britain Comparisons produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 29 May 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
Statistics on Great Britain Comparisons include data for England, Scotland and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2006. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 June 2007
The key points from the latest release are:
- The number of licensed road vehicles in Wales increased by 13 per cent between 2002 and 2006. There were increases of 8 per cent and 11 per cent in England and Scotland respectively.
- In 2005, the proportion of households in Wales owning at least one car (77 per cent) was higher than in England and Scotland (76 per cent and 69 per cent, respectively).
- Wales has a higher proportion of people using a car, van or minibus to travel to work (81 per cent in 2006) than England or Scotland (70 per cent and 69 per cent respectively).
- It is estimated that the volume of motor vehicle traffic on all roads in Wales increased by 6 per cent between 2002 and 2006, with England and Scotland increasing by 4 per cent and 6 per cent respectively.
- The number of local bus passenger journeys in Wales increased by 4 per cent between 2002 and 2006, with England and Scotland increasing by 10 per cent and 2 per cent respectively.
- The number of road accident casualties per 100,000 population in Wales (428 in 2006) was lower than in England (450) but higher than Scotland (337).
- It is estimated that on average during 2005-06, people in Wales travelled further than people in England or Scotland. In Wales 71 per cent of trips in 2005-06 were by car or van compared to 64 per cent in England and 62 per cent in Scotland.
