Fire Statistics, Wales 2006

The latest National Statistics on Fire statistics produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 2 April 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

National Statistics Kitemark Statistics on fire incidents include data for Wales for the period up to the end of December 2006. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 27 March 2007.

The Welsh Assembly Government compiles these statistics from reports on all fires attended submitted by all Fire and Rescue Services in Wales to the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG).

The bulletin covers the period 1994-2006 and provides the latest annual in-depth analysis of fire incidents attended by Welsh Fire and Rescue Services. Analysis includes details on location, cause, motive, casualties and false alarms attended.

The key points from the latest release are:

Fires

  • The Welsh Fire and Rescue Services attended around 46,900 fires and false alarms in 2006, an increase of 9 per cent on 2005.
  • The number of primary fires in Wales decreased by 5 per cent over the year from 9,100 in 2005 to 8,700 in 2006.

Casualties

  • There were 22 fatal casualties from fires in Wales in 2006 compared with 31 in 2005. This is the lowest number since 1994.
  • The number of non-fatal casualties from fires fell by 11 per cent over the year to 664 in 2006 from 744 in 2005.

False Alarms

  • In 2006 there were 19,800 false fire alarms in Wales, up from 18,800 in 2005.
  • Overall the number of malicious false fire alarms has increased by less than 1 per cent since 2005 to 1,670 in 2006.

Smoke Alarms

  • In 39 per cent of the 2,500 fires in dwellings in Wales, no smoke alarm was installed.
