Financial Contingency Funds in Wales, 2005/06

This Statistical Bulletin presents information on the number of awards from Financial Contingency Funds (FCFs) to higher and further education students between 1999/2000 and 2005/06.
The bulletin is based on data collected by DELLS and HEFCW from Further Education and Higher Education institutions.
Key results for 2005/06
In Higher Education:
- The number of students applying for financial assistance from financial contingency funds fell by 9 per cent to 8,290 compared with the previous year. The number of successful applications also fell to 7,050 (7 per cent decrease) compared with the same period.
- £5.1 million was awarded to students from Financial Contingency Funds, similar to the total awarded in 2004/05.
- 32 per cent of successful applicants were aged under 21 whilst 34 per cent were aged between 21 and 24.
In Further Education
- 18,940 students applied for financial assistance from financial contingency funds, an increase of 1 per cent in comparison to 2004/05. Of these applicants, 17,420 were successful, again an increase of 1 per cent on the 2004/05 figure.
- 26,250 individual awards were funded, totalling £6.3m, a drop in expenditure of 4 per cent.
- 62 per cent of awards were given to students aged between 16 and 18.
