New Post-16 Qualifications in Schools, 2000/01

Several new post-16 qualifications were introduced during 2000/01. This Statistical Bulletin gives details of the entries and performance in: Advanced Subsidiary level; the new format A level; the new vocational A level qualification; and Key Skills.
Advanced Subsidiary level
- There were over 22,000 entries in the new Advanced Subsidiary level exam, alongside about 2,000 entries for Advanced Supplementary levels. The total compares to 2,000 of the equivalent Advanced Supplementary level entries in 1999/2000.
- Over 99 per cent of the AS levels taken by 17 year olds were Advanced Subsidiary level; whereas most AS levels taken by 18 year olds were Advanced Supplementary levels.
- The pass rate for Advanced Subsidiary was 61 per cent at grade A-C and 89 per cent at grade A-E, compared with 37 per cent and 72 per cent respectively for Advanced Supplementary level .
New format A level
- There were 130 entries in the new format A level, with a 79 per cent pass rate at grade A-C and 98 per cent at grade A-E .
Vocational A levels
- There were 118 entries in new vocational A levels, with an overall pass rate of 40 per cent.
- There were 537 entries in new vocational AS levels, with an overall pass rate of 59 per cent.
Key Skills
There were no Key Skills certificates awarded during 2000/01, although work completed during the year may lead to certificates being awarded during 2001/02.
