Education Maintenance Allowances Awarded in Wales 2006/07
The Release

This Statistical First Release presents information on the number of Education Maintenance Allowances (EMAs) awarded to students aged 16, 17 and 18 in further education in Welsh schools and further education institutions.
The data, based on applications received by 31st August 2007, were extracted by the Student Loans Company (SLC) on 13th September 2007.
Key results:
- By 31st August 2007, a total of 32,600 EMA Wales applications had been received.
- 30,370 (93 per cent) of applications received were approved, whilst 750 (2 per cent) of applications were rejected.
- 82 per cent of approved applications were from students with a household income of £20,810 or less and thus were entitled to the maximum EMA of £30 per week.
- 15,100 (50 per cent) of approved applications in 2006/07 were for 16 year olds compared with 14,110 in 2005/06. 11,720 (39 per cent) were for 17 year olds compared with 11,510 in 2005/06.
- Retention bonuses were paid in September to 10,960 students continuing their studies from 2005/06.
