Participation Rates for Welsh Students in Higher Education

On 11 April 2000 the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales published report ‘Participation Rates for Welsh Students in Higher Education within the UK during 1997/98’ which shows the extent to which the people of Wales are taking part in higher education.

  • In 1997/98 there were nearly 89,000 Welsh domiciled students studying for higher education qualifications in HE institutions and further education colleges in the UK.
  • Just over half of the students were full-time undergraduates and the majority of these were under 25 years old.
  • Forty per cent of Welsh students were studying on a part time basis and the majority of these were 25 years old or older.
  • Two thirds of Welsh students were studying in Welsh institutions.
  • The regions with the lowest uptake were the valleys areas of South Wales, in particular Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil. In the North East border areas, Flintshire and Wrexham also showed a low uptake.
  • Ceredigion, the Vale of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire were the regions where the highest HE participation rates were recorded.
  • Nearly all of rural mid and North Wales has high full time participation amongst the under 25 population while the South Eastern valleys have very low participation.
