Assembly Learning Grants Awarded to Welsh Domiciled Students 2006/07 (Provisional)

This Statistical First Release presents provisional information on the number of Assembly Learning Grants (ALGs) awarded in 2006/07 to further education students and higher education students that first enrolled prior to the 2006/07 academic year. The data published in this release are not comparable with those previously published.
The release is based on data provided by Welsh Local Education Authorities and the Student Loans Company as at 23 February 2007. Final data will be published in October.
Key results for 2006/07 (provisional):
Further Education
- 4,310 students in Further Education applied for an Assembly Learning Grant as at end February 2007.
- 4,120 applications were successful (96 per cent of applications).
- For 2006/07 the student eligibility criteria was changed to students aged 19 or over at the start of the academic year. As a result figures are lower than in previous years and cannot be directly compared.
- 88 per cent of all applications and 91 per cent of successful applications were from full time students.
Higher Education
- 4,280 continuing students in Higher Education applied for an Assembly Learning Grant as at end February 2007.
- 4,060 applications were successful, 95 per cent of those applying.
- 310 successful applications were from part-time students whilst 1,180 were for ALGs for full-time students.
- 2,570 ALGs were awarded as 'top-ups' amounting to £1,285,000.
