Student Loans for Higher Education in Wales, 2006-07 (Provisional)
On 12th June 2007 the Student Loans Company (SLC) published provisional 2006-07 financial year data and final 2005-06 data on higher education student loans in Wales.
The Statistical Release presents provisional information on student loan outlay and repayment for all Welsh domiciled students and those EU students studying in Wales for the first time, reflecting the fact that the Welsh Assembly Government took full responsibility for student support in Wales from 2006/07.
Key results are:
- At the end of the 2006-07 financial year the outstanding balance of student loans had exceeded £1 billion. The figure had increased by £158 million since the previous financial year and stood at £1.13 billion.
- £1.06 billion of this figure relates to income contingent loans for which the Assembly has responsibility. The remainder are mortgage style loans which remain the responsibility of DfES.
- £164m was lent to Welsh domiciled students or EU students in Wales last year, £149m of which was for maintenance loans and £15m of which was for tuition fee loans. Maintenance loan outlay had increased by 0.6% compared with the previous year.
- £29m worth of loans had been repaid to borrowers' accounts. £19m of these repayments related to Income Contingent Loans.
